Roy McSweeney of Hawthorne, Florida

Roy McSweeney, 74, of Hawthorne passed away unexpectedly at the Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Florida. He was born in Wayne, West Virginia and resided there throughout his childhood. He was a resident of Hawthorne, FL for the past eight months coming from Melrose, FL. He enjoyed working in the yard, especially mowing the grass. He loved time with his family and meeting new people. He was passionately known to his family and friends as “John Wayne” and for picking up cans while riding his scooter. He is preceded in death by his parents, Wesley and Olga McSweeney and a son, Jack Wesley McSweeney. Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Sharon McSweeney of Hawthorne, FL; his sons and daughter-in-law, Roy Vernon McSweeney, Jr and wife Dana and Anthony Wade McSweeney; his daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Jason Bailey of Hawthorne, FL; his brothers and sister-in-law, Donald McSweeney of Hawthorne, FL and Charles and Loretta McSweeney of Hawthorne, FL; his sisters and brother-in-law, Naomi Mason of Ft. Walton Beach, FL and Eva and Terry Steen of Hawthorne, FL; eight grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 23, 2011 at the Masters Funeral Home in Palatka, FL with Pastor Charles McSweeney officiating. Interment will follow in Ochwilla Cemetery in Hawthorne, FL. To celebrate his life a memorial tribute will be shown.
